Wild honeybee hive near Borrego Springs, CA

In rocks in middle of Anza-Borrego Desert. Probably africanized bees but not aggressive. First found in 1997 and observed to be occupied once every year in winter to 2009. South facing large opening hot summer sun melts much comb every year.

Samples of wax sent to Judy Wu at WSU for studies of wax contamination. Samples of bees sent to David Schneider at Stanford Univ. for testing for Wolbachia bacterium.
