This active hive is nestled in an old Black Walnut Tree near the southwest corner of the Old Health Building. The entrance is about 10 feet off the ground and faces east. Look for the walnut tree closest to the building. You can easily see the bees flying from the sidewalk along Jones Street. It has been active for over 5 years and may have origins for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Discovery Room located three blocks away which maintains an observation hive which swarms from time to time.
I am the beekeeper and coordinator of the Discovery Room for the Museum of Natural Sciences. This hive seems very vigorous and we noticed it about 5 years ago when it swarmed in a tree hanging over the Jones Street sidewalk.
