Hive in a large very old Sweet Gum Tree with hollow cavity from base of ground to about 9 feet that you can see. Cavity in tree suspected to be much larger. Two openings on opposite sides of tree. Strong smell of honey on hot humid day. We do not know how long hive has been here but there are lots of very active bees.
The tree is dying and will need cut at some point in the next year. We plan to cut top of tree for safety but leave large portion of trunk to protect hive. We have lived here 10 years and are not sure of how long bees have been there. We have always had honey bees around but only noticed hive with in last year.
